EQUIPMENT
Every disc golf player need to have at least one disc. Discs used for disc golf are designed and shaped for control, speed, and accuracy while general-purpose flying discs, such as those used for playing guts or ultimate, have a more traditional shape, similar to a catch disc. There is a wide variety of discs used in disc golf and they are generally divided into three categories:
- DRIVER: Drivers are usually recognized by their sharp, bevelled edge and have most of their mass concentrated on the outer rim of the disc rather than distributed equally throughout. Because the physics of a disc require "snap" or "flick", which means putting spin on the disc, new players generally find that throwing a distance driver accurately can be somewhat difficult and will require experience with disc golf disc response. This is why it is better for players to begin with fairway drivers, long drivers, or even mid-ranges, and incorporate maximum distance drivers as their strength and disc control increases.
- PUTTER: Putters are similar to the discs used in simple games of catch, such as the Wham-o brand Frisbee. They are designed to fly straight, predictably, and very slowly compared to mid-range discs and drivers. They are typically used for tight, controlled shots that are close to the basket, although some players use them for short drives where trees or other obstacles come into play.
- MID-RANGE: Mid-range discs have slightly sharper edges that enable them to cut through the air better. These discs are usually more stable than a driver and have a more stable and predictable flight path. They are faster and have a longer range than a putter. Some players will use mid-ranges as drivers, and there are tournaments that require players to use only mid-range discs. They are good all-around discs and are suitable for a first time player.
By shape of flight path we recognize following types:
- STABLE: Disc will tend to go straight when thrown flat. This type of disc is suitable for beginner players.
- UNDERSTABLE: Disc will go in the direction of the throwing hand, so our right handed player's understable disc will turn right.
- OVERSTABLE: Disc will tend to go in the direction that is opposite of the throwing hand, so our right handed player's overstable disc will tend to fall left. This type of disc is handy for windy conditions.
Flying path of disc can be altered by changing angle in which the disc is released with information above being valid for disc released leveled to the ground. When choosing your disc you also need to count weight of disc (150-180 grams). Disc over 170 grams are suitable for power based players and lower weight discs are suitable for beginners, women and juniors.
In Czech republic you can buy disc golf disc in internet shops www.prodg.cz, www.ultimo.cz and www.discgolfovahriste.cz.
THROW VARIANTS
- BACKHAND: Is one of the most important throws without which almost no player can live. Disc is being hold by thumb on top side of disc with rest of fingers resting on inner rim on bottom side of disc. Stance is in with right shoulder aiming towards target (right hand players) and disc is being release in front of body.
- FOREHAND: Disc is being hold by thumb on top side of disc with index and middle fingers resting on inner rim on bottom side of disc. Stance is in direction to target and disc is being released on right side (for right hand players).
- OVER (TOMAHAWK): Is used to throw over high obstacles. Grip is same as for forehand and disc is (using ball throw motion) release up to air in direction to target.
- THUMBER: Is used to throw over high obstacles and apart of different grip where thumb is pushed against inner rim on bottom side and index finger and middle finger is on top side of disc is based on same principles as over.
- ROLLER: Is throw where backhand or forehand throw is tilt so it is landing on edge and then continue rolling on the ground.
